Value Education - Rules & Boundaries

Why Do We Have Rules?

Rules help us stay safe, respect others, and have fun!

What Are Some Important Rules?

1. Listen and Follow Directions:

When teachers or adults give us instructions, we need to listen carefully and do what they say.

2. Be Kind and Respectful:

We need to treat others the way we want to be treated - with kindness and respect.

3. Use Inside Voices and Gentle Hands:

When we're inside, we need to use our inside voices and gentle hands so we don't disturb or hurt others.

4. Stay Safe:

We need to hold someone's hand when we're walking outside and stay away from things that might hurt us.

5. Take Turns and Share:

We need to take turns and share with our friends so everyone gets a chance to play.

Why Are Boundaries Important?

Boundaries help us know what is allowed and what is not allowed. They keep us safe and help us respect others.

What Happens If We Don't Follow the Rules?

If we don't follow the rules, we might get hurt, hurt someone else, or make someone feel sad. We might also miss out on fun activities.

Let's Be Rule Followers!

By following the rules and respecting boundaries, we can have a happy, safe, and fun kindergarten year!

This explanation uses simple language and concepts to introduce kindergarten students to the importance of rules and boundaries.

Here's a story for kindergarten students about Accountability:

Benny's Classroom Rules

Benny the Bear was excited for his first day of kindergarten. When he arrived in his classroom, his teacher, Mrs. Thompson, welcomed him and showed him around.

Mrs. Thompson explained the classroom rules to Benny and his friends:

1. Raise your hand to speak.

2. Use inside voices.

3. Be kind to friends.

Benny was eager to follow the rules. He raised his hand to ask questions, used his inside voice during lessons, and shared his toys with friends.

One day, while playing with blocks, Benny got excited and started shouting. Mrs. Thompson gently reminded him to use his inside voice.

Benny apologized and continued building with his friends. He learned that following the rules helped everyone have fun and stay safe.

Question For Discussion:

1. What are some classroom rules that Benny followed?

2. Why is it important to use inside voices?

3. What happens when we don't follow the rules?

4. How can we show kindness to our friends?

5. How can we respect each other's boundaries?

Activity ideas:

1. Classroom Rules Charades

  • Write classroom rules on slips of paper (e.g., raise a hand, take turns).
  • Have students act out the rules without speaking.
  • Classmates guess the rule.

2. The Stoplight Rule

  • Introduce the stoplight rule: red (stop), yellow (caution), green (go).
  • Use a stoplight prop or poster.
  • Role-play different scenarios (e.g., sharing toys, taking turns).

3. Boundary Bingo

  • Create bingo cards with pictures or words related to boundaries (e.g., personal space, sharing).
  • Call out the words or show the pictures.
  • Have students mark the corresponding squares.

4. Rules Sorting Game

  • Prepare cards or pictures with different rules (e.g., classroom, playground, home).
  • Have students sort the rules into categories.
