TWO LITTLE BLACKBIRDS - STEM activity



Materials:


- 2 small toy birds or figurines- 2 pieces of string or yarn- 2 small sticks or straws- Tape- Scissors- Weights (e.g., pennies, washers)

Procedure:1. Introduction: 

Introduce the story of "Two Little Blackbirds" and explain that we will be exploring how to make the birds fly.

2. Design Challenge: 

Challenge the children to design a way to make the birds fly using the materials provided.

3. Experimentation: 

Have the children experiment with different designs, such as:    - Tying the string around the bird's legs and attaching it to the stick.    - Using tape to attach the bird to the stick.    - Adding weights to the bird to see how it affects its flight.

4. Testing: 

Have the children test their designs by gently pulling the string or blowing on the bird.
5. Reflection: Have the children reflect on their designs and discuss what worked well and what didn't.


Tips and Variations:1. Use Different Materials: 

Experiment with different materials, such as paper clips, straws, or popsicle sticks.

2. Add a Wind Component: 

Use a fan or blower to simulate wind and test the birds' flight.

3. Create a Bird Sanctuary: 

Have the children design and build a bird sanctuary using cardboard, sticks, and other materials.
